From birth to death, life is the greatest kōan of all.
We sit with this kōan, as we rise from sleep at dawn, when we sit with our morning tea, when we find ourselves at a loss, in the midst of overwhelm, at the end of the day, as we settle down to sleep, or in so many other situations.
It seems unresolvable.
But it’s not a definitive answer that we’re seeking. It is the direction in which the kōan points our attention that is the key here, this questioning, this raising of doubt.
All questions are here to point us home, even this, the great kōan of life.
Note | A kōan is a paradoxical anecdote, a riddle without a solution, used to flip our understanding on its head, by demonstrating the inadequacy of logical reasoning.
